I just noticed that the Scouts Canada home page has changed again. Its as bad as Facebook!! The previous link I posted is now called Scouters, and leads to a page with links to everything a Scouter needs!

The home page for the Scouts Canada website has recently been re-done. At first glance it is a lot simpler and appears as if there is a lot less information available. However the menu bar at the top of the page provides easy links to help and support our leaders. I particularly like the resources link because it take you to a page of links to anything and everything you might need to know. I have included the URL in the list of useful links on the right hand side of this page.

New Area Commissioner

On behalf of Darren Thomson, Cascadia Council Commissioner, we are pleased to introduce Ian Smith as the newly appointed Area Commissioner for the Central Okanagan Area effective September 1, 2011.

As Area Commissioner, Ian has accepted the challenge to lead the Central Okanagan Area to increase scouting membership, community visibility, and to provide the Scouting Youth in the area with additional leadership opportunities.

Building on the foundational work of his predecessors, Ian looks forward to the challenge… "The Central Okanagan is one of the best places in the world I have seen for being outdoors, which is such a key element of Scouting, and to coin an old phrase, putting the out in Scouting‟, will be one of my priorities."

Ian has been in and around Scouting since he joined Cubs in England a little over 40 years ago. He then served as a Scout for 4 years, and leader for almost 4. After moving to Canada in 2003 Ian reconnected with Scouting as the 1st Glenvalley Group Administrator in 2004, overlapping that position with the Troop Scouter role from 2005 to 2011.

Please offer your congratulations and support to Ian as he commences this new adventure and learns how to support the groups in his new role as Area Commissioner.

TD Trees

TD TREES is a project whereby TD Canada Trust across Canada is planting trees. The local TD here in Kelowna will be planting 1,000 trees along the new Mission Linear Park, adjoining Camp Dunlop, on Sunday Sep 26th, from 9:00am to 11:30am, and are looking for some local help to assist their staff members. What better way to start the year!!!

If you are interested in participating, please be sure to visit www.tdtreedays.com to register. Push the “register” button, select Kelowna from the drop-down menu, and complete the information.

There may be some t-shirts or other product available to all who help out, so please be sure to register in order to be counted in the numbers!!

Schools in Scouting Camp Cook Required

Position: The Camp Cook is an integral part of the summer camp staff team of 8. All camp staff live at the camp Monday to Friday from May 25 through June 25; and July 4-9 and July 11-16 2010 ROOM & BOARD INCLUDED.

We are looking for a dynamic, energetic, and fun individual who has cooking experience and enjoys youth between ages 9-14 yrs.

MUST HAVE:

FoodSafe Level 1
First Aid
Can pass a Police Records Check

Responsibilities:

Prepare and cook all meals and snacks for camp
Tracking food inventory
Daily kitchen cleaning

Qualifications:

Experience cooking
Able to work unassisted
Ability to work as part of a fun and dynamic team of Camp Leaders
Enjoy the outdoors and have a sense of adventure

Salary Range: $10 - $14 per hour

General clean up of the camp grounds – fallen branches, weeds, etc
Creek trail maintenance – lined with rocks, weeded, raked
Hillside trail maintenance – weeded, raked
Beach front clean up
Clean Spiffy Biffy’s
Main campfire cradles for new log seats
Main fire pit repairs
Repair badminton net
Firewood stacking in corrals
Chapel preparation – seats, etc
Paint storage unit – adult or senior Scouts (The paint is an industrial enamel – filter masks are advisable for this – if anyone has these devices as well as brushes or 4” rollers it would be appreciated if they could be available for this project)

A light lunch will be provided by our Area Commissioner – please reply to campdunlop@shaw.ca with yes/no regarding being on hand at lunch time and/or taking part on the projects.

At 3pm, there will be Honors & Awards presentations by Art Fletcher and Susan MacGregor.

Scout Blobs in the Dark aka Night Hike 2010

Location: Hydraulic Lake vicinity
Cost: Approx $15 per Blobticipant
Details: A Blobbolicious overnight event for Scout Troops. If you wish to bring 3rd year Cubs they must be as part of a Scout Troop and traveling / camping with that Troop.
All Troops are responsible for:

pre-registering their attendance by May 1, 2010
set up of their own campsites prior to youth departing on the hike
meals and snacks for their youth and Leaders
ensuring participants have water and snacks for the hike, and are dressed for outdoor activities/hiking

Leaders will sign up their Scouts (at on-site check-in) for scheduled departure times starting after 6:30 PM Saturday evening.

Stations concepts have been developed, and Venturers, Rovers and Leaders/Adults are needed to set up and run the Blobsites. Bring your own meal and a comfy chair and come have an evening of fun! Anyone interested in signing up to run a station please email Anne Tucker at tuckerscouts@yahoo.com

North Glenmore Group Commissioner

Wendy Remesz has stepped away from the position of Group Commissioner of 1st North Glenmore effective immediately. We would like to thank Wendy for all of her efforts in guiding the Group over the past 2 1/2 years, and wish her the best as she continues on in the role of Venturer Advisor with the 1st North Glenmore Company.

Rick Bomford has agreed to step into the position and to ensure North Glenmore continues to have strong leadership through the end of the Scouting year. For those of you who may not know Rick, he is in his 4th year as a leader with 1st North Glenmore, is currently a Cub leader who is also on the Group Committee, and has frequently represented North Glenmore at the Area meetings and events.

Pitch-in Week

PITCH-IN WEEK Registration has been extended until April 1, 2010! We noticed we have a real shortage of Scouts, Guides and youth groups this year and would like to make sure that all groups get the chance to participate.
